■Shokannon Bodhisattva (Shokannon Bodhisattva) The principal deity of the Tendai, Shingon, and Rinzai sects. Also known as Kannon Bodhisattva, this name refers to the fact that he is always watching over people and will instantly save them if they call for help. He is widely worshipped in Japan. When saving those in distress, he transforms into various forms, such as the Thousand-Armed Kannon or the Eleven-Headed Kannon, and extends a helping hand. To distinguish him from the Henge Kannon, he is called Shokannon, as he represents the basic form of all Kannon Bodhisattvas. The lotus flower in his left hand represents us humans, and Shokannon Bodhisattva's desire to open the petals represents his gentle desire to awaken our minds, which are difficult to enlighten. He is a bodhisattva who always oversees the world and saves us from troubles and suffering. While often enshrined alone, he is sometimes worshipped as a triad with Seishi Bodhisattva, flanking Amida Buddha on his left. The Heart Sutra is said to expound on the merits of Kannon Bodhisattva.
