In 1972, during the latter half of the Vietnam War, the US Air Force conducted large-scale air operations as part of the resumed "bombing of North Vietnam."

During this period, Captain Cunningham and Lieutenant Driscoll became the first US Navy aces of the Vietnam War, shooting down five enemy fighters.

The aircraft they flew when they shot down three enemy fighters in a single mission and became "aces" had the radio call number "Showtime 100."
